After the Storm

Umi jori mo mada fukadu; Hirokazu Koreeda, 117´, 2016, OV (jap.) + ST (cz; Hirokazu Koreeda, 2016, versions: OR,CS,

Director: Hirokazu Koreeda • Scenario: Hirokazu Koreeda • Camera: Jutaka Jamasaki • Haircut: Hirokazu Koreeda • Cast: Hiroshi Abe, Taiyo Yoshizawa, Kirin Kiki

Ryota (Hiroshi Abe) is a prodigal son, a deadbeat father and a formerly successful yet now washed-out writer. His muse has long deserted him, and hence he earns his living as a private detective. Divorced, he desperately seeks to win back the love of his 11-year-old son, Shingo (Taiyo Yoshizawa). His ex-wife, Kyoko, now has a life of her own and rather views Ryota as a distant memory. One evening, the estranged trio are brought together by an approaching typhoon, which forces them to spend a night at the home of Ryota’s kind-hearted mother, Yoshiko (Kirin Kiki). How does their relationship turn out after the storm? A master of the family sketch, Hirokazu Koreeda has returned with a new feature about disrupted personal bonds, the delicate love between parents and children, when sometimes the most powerful of tempests are those that do not stir a leaf. Owing to its precise nature and dramatic structure, the film is reminiscent of Anton Pavlovich Chekhov’s plays, duly confirming Koreeda’s status as one of the major contemporary Asian directors.
