Grâce à Dieu

Grâce à Dieu ; François Ozon, 2018, versions: OR,SS,ES, languages: fra

Director: François Ozon • Scenario: Francois Ozon • Camera: Manuel Dacosse • Cast: Melvil Poupaud, Denis Ménochet, Swann Arlaud, Josiane Balasko, Eric Caravaca

The poignant story of the archdiocese of Lyon, France, where Father Bernard Preynat has over 70 documented cases of sexual abuse on his conscience, dating to the early 1980s. The film is an uncompromising, pointed critique not only of the priest himself, but of other prominent leaders of the Catholic Church in France. The explosive subject matter presents multiple cases of men who were abused as boys and, years later, have mustered the courage to give their shocking testimonies. “I came across the La Parole Libérée website by chance and was extremely touched by several of the victim’s testimonies, including that of Alexandre, a devout Catholic who fought for two years in order to gain recognition as a victim and to ensure that the priest who abused him, and who is still alive, would no longer be in contact with children. The film focuses more on the human aspect of the events. The film’s real topic is the freedom of speech, and the re-percussions of the victims' freedom of speech.” (François Ozon)
