On the Edge

Kroky na hrane; Viliam Bendík, 2017, versions: OR, languages: slk

Director: Viliam Bendík • Scenario: Viliam Bendík

Two Slovaks, Rudolf Vrba and Alfred Wetzler, fled the living hell of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp in occupied Poland in April 1944. They wanted to share information about the industrial-scale elimination of Jews in the camp with the world, and especially with the over 700,000 Hungarian Jews in immediate danger of deportation and subsequent death. Their escape through enemy territory was difficult, and they were on the run mostly during nights: selflessly helped by those risking their own and their families’ lives. This true story was recreated 73 years later by six ultra-runners following the exact same route from sunrise on April 21, 2017 to commemorate Vrba and Wetzler. One hundred and seventy kilometers in the Polish-Slovak border mountains changed their lives forever...
