It Must Be Heaven

It Must Be Heaven; Elia Suleiman, 2019, versions: OR,CS, languages: ara, eng, fra

Director: Elia Suleiman • Cast: Ali Suliman, Elia Suleiman, Grégoire Colin, Gael García Bernal, Vincent Maraval, Robert Higden

Elia Suleiman lives poetry. The most famous Palestinian director returns to (feature-length) film for the first time in ten years with a melancholic, episodically constructed slapstick comedy about what home is and what defines it. Suleiman ties into the poetics of his previous films in which he has always appeared in a non-verbal main role reminiscent of Jacques Tati or Buster Keaton. It Must Be Heaven is a film dedicated to Palestine, which Suleiman is not afraid to subject to the same brand of peculiar, distinctly sarcastic, yet poetic humor that he wields against France or the USA. The latter country is the destination for the main character of this funny and touching film - a somewhat marginalized director looking for funding for a film that is apparently not Palestinian enough.
