Lies My Father Told Me

Lies My Father Told Me; Ján Kadár, 1975, OV (ang., fran., hebr.) + eST (cz) ; Ján Kadár, 1975, versions: OR,CS,

Lektorský úvod: Václav Macek a Egon Gál

Director: Ján Kadár • Scenario: Ted Allan • Kameraman: Paul Van der Linden, Árpád Makay • Actors: Yossi Yadin, Len Birman, Marilyn Lightstone, Jeffrey Lynas, Ted Allan

Ted Allan’s short story “Lies My Father Told Me” is a classic of 1940s Canadian literature, living on in the of new editions, radio plays and television adaptations. At the beginning

of the 1970s, young producer Harry Gulkin decided to use the timeless tale as a basis for a Canadian cinematic milestone. The result involved a substantial reworking of the original story. Ted Allan’s work was inspired by nostalgic

memories of his contradictory love for his businessman father, who lived in a world of unsuccessful inventions.

Kadár transformed this originally sentimental memoir into a film about the universality of childhood, that paradise lost that isn't always a paradise, but nonetheless can never

be replaced. With its warmly funny memories of growing up in a Russian-Jewish immigrant family living on the outskirts of early-twentieth-century Montreal, the film may evoke

comparisons to Fellini's "Amarcord", where the filmmaker reflects on his childhood in Rimini. “Lies My Father Told Me” won the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Film and earned actor Jeffrey Lynas a nomination as best debut actor, while Ted Allan received an Oscar nomination for Best Original

Screenplay.
