Ashes and Diamonds

Popiół i diament; Andrzej Wajda, 1958, OV (poľ.) + ST (sk) | Filmový kabinet; Andrzej Wajda, 1958, versions: OR

The adaptation of a novel by Jerzy Andrzejewski captures a particular stage of the complicated history of post-war Poland. It is a continuous fight on several fronts. Not a fight against occupation anymore, but a fight against own people. The protagonists are two brave young men confident that they are fighting for their motherland. However, they don’t really know their “enemy” – it is enough that their commander marks the enemy and they comply. They are indifferent towards the fact that on the very first day of peace they kill two innocents – and they don’t even know why they are supposed to kill a regional secretary of a working party. Of the two, only Maciek thinks about his future days, even if it’s only for a fleeting moment – he yearns after human happiness, after love. But the war is not yet over for him and his friends. What is more, he eventually becomes one of its victims as well. Show more
