The Red Turtle

La tortue rouge; Michael Dudok de Wit, 2016, versions: OR,

Without words

Director: Michael Dudok de Wit • Scenario: Michael Dudok de Wit, Pascale Ferran • Haircut: Céline Kélépikis • Music: Laurent Perez Del Mar

The story of a castaway on a tropical island inhabited only by turtles, crabs and birds, is also a universal story of all pivotal moments in a person’s life. The director Michaël Dudok de Wit, who received an Oscar for the movie Father and Daughter, tells a tale of getting to know oneself, of love, parenthood and changing generations, without using any words, only with the help of craftsmanship-wise perfect animation. A magical story about the circle of human life, understood by generations and across continents, won the special Un Certain Regard prize at the Cannes International Film Festival, and it’s the first time that the classic Japanese Studio Ghibli cooperated with a European director.
