Refugees: Who Needs Them?

Refugees: Who Needs Them?; Miles Roston, 2012, OV (ang., hol.) + eST | Jeden svet; Miles Roston, 2012, versions: OR,SS,

Director: Miles Roston

As the debate on immigration is on the rise across Europe and the hard line against immigrants and refugees tightens, the Dutch government invites some refugees in and offers them a new home. The film shot over the course of 2011 follows dramatic stories of five of these refugees forced to flee because of their political or religious opinions and ethnic background that put them at risk in their countries.

The refugees come into the world now in the grip of growing anti-immigration rhetoric, and each of them has to face the hostile climate and obstacles to integrate in their new home. Still, they do their very best to adapt to Dutch culture and go to everything as Dutch as they can: they struggle to learn language, celebrate the Queen's Day, see art exhibitions of Dutch painters or visit the Anne Frank House. But everything they all want to know now is whether they are wanted, useful or even needed.

Are these refugees a threat to us or do we need them?

The film screening is part of the Global Migration Film Festival 2017 in Slovakia and the One World Festival.
